How to bet on Boxing 2017

Boxing matches often feature money line proposition wagers on knockouts, draws, rounds and the duration of the fight. Odds vary on each fight.

Boxing , fighting and gambling have always been linked, though sometimes a little too close. There have been many accusations of fight rigging over the years, with boxers being accused of going down too easily and judges not seeming as impartial as they should be. For these reasons there has been some decline in the amount of wagering being done on boxing – a sport that at one time was at the very forefront of sports gambling.

There are, however, many great wagering opportunities in the sport of boxing. What you’ll find below is a rundown on the different types of bets you can place, ranging from the straightforward money line, which involves betting on boxers; over/under bets, which involve betting on a number of rounds; bets people make on whether they think the fight will go the distance or be stopped as well as other special betting options.

Boxing Betting – The Money Line

You can place a money line bet on every single boxing match available. This entails placing a bet on your boxer of choice or on whether the fight will end in a draw. What follows is an example involving a fictional match-up between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. The odds in a sports-book would be listed as follows:

Manny Pacquiao -300
Floyd Mayweather +250
Draw +2500

In this fight, the sportsbook in question favors Pacquiao and you would need to wager $300 on him in order to win $100. Conversely, if you think the odds on Mayweather are too good to pass up, you would need to wager $100 to win $250. If you think the fight will be too close to call, you might want to bet on the draw, where a $100 bet would return a profit of $2500.

The odds used above are presented in a format common to US sportsbooks; however, many international sportsbooks use the decimal or fractional odds format shown below:

Manny Pacquiao 1.33 (1/3)
Floyd Mayweather 3.5 (5/2)
Draw 26 (25/1)

Boxing Betting – Round Betting Over/Under

Though money line betting is a straightforward way to go about wagering on boxing, you may want to explore other betting avenues. An interesting bet to make is on whether or not the fight will go under or over a certain number of rounds.

If we were to go back to our fictional Pacquiao versus Mayweather fight, a sportsbook may offer the following line:

Over 5.5 rounds -110
Under 5.5 rounds -110

Both selections have the same odds, which means that the sportsbook in question thinks there is an even chance of under or over. You would need to wager $110 to win $100 on each of these selections.

There are also other ways to bet on rounds. Some sportsbooks may offer grouped round betting, where one is able to bet on each fighter to win on rounds 1-3, rounds 4-6, rounds 7-9, rounds 10 to 12, or win on points. Some will also offer the same type of bet on each individual round so that if you think Pacquiao will win round 1 but Mayweather will win round 7, you’ll be able to place these individual bets as well.

Boxing Betting – Method of Victory

One of the most popular bets in boxing is the Method of Victory bet. Here is an example:

Manny Pacquiao by Stoppage -150
Manny Pacquiao on Points +150
Floyd Mayweather by Stoppage +1000
Floyd Mayweather on Points +325
Draw +2500

In this scenario, you’ll get better odds on the fighter you think will win, but it requires that you get the Method of Victory correct. This is a good bet to make if you have a serious hunch about the outcome of the match.

Boxing Betting – Specials

Some sportsbooks will offer special bets on certain high profile bouts. An example of this could be a bet on whether or not there will be a knockdown in a specific round; whether both fighters will go down in a fight; or the opposite, where both fighters remain on their feet throughout. Sometimes, before a fight, a boxer may announce that he will win the fight in a certain round and there may be special bets attached to this prediction.

Occasionally, there are fight nights where mini competitions are held and these are especially popular in the UK under the “Prizefighter” banner. Outright betting will be available on all of the contestants (normally eight). This is a rare occasion for you to bet on a knockout competition.

Summary of Boxing Betting – The Final Bell

The most important things to keep in mind while betting on boxing is to choose your bets wisely, consider all aspects of a fight, pick the best bet for you and be sure to sit back and watch the action unfold as you maximize your return!
